The tree planting program known as the Great Green Wall Project is under investigation for allegedly spending 81 billion naira to plant twenty one million trees in the northern states bordering Nigeria.

The committee of the House of Representatives of Nigeria is conducting the investigation, on how the environmental development fund and other funds of the fund were used.

The states include Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauci, Gombe, Adamawa, Yobe and Borno.

The director of NAGWW, Yusuf Maina Bukar, told the committee that the agency spent 697.71 million naira to renovate its office and 11.28 billion naira to carry out major projects.

He added that most of the funds that the agency receives, come from 15 percent of the funds of the environment and environment fund and those provided by the federal government.

In addition to this, the committee also investigated the Central Bank of Nigeria about more than seven other accounts known to the bank.

A six-page document dated August 22, 2023, submitted to the committee by the CBN shows that about 9.5 billion naira has been deposited into the agency's account since 2015 to that date.

The Chief Accountant of Nigeria, Oluwatoyin Madein has stated that the NAGWW has received over 19 billion naira since February 2019.

The chairman of the investigation committee of the National House of Representatives, Isma'ila Haruna Dabo and other members of the committee expressed concern over the way the money was spent.

The committee stated that it is necessary for them to carry out a thorough investigation on this issue considering the amount of money the agency receives from the federal government of Nigeria and other foreign countries but it has gone off the path it was placed on.
